What is a grabber?

Grabber is a type of combat robot whose main tactic isn’t immediate destruction of the opponent, but rather grabbing, holding, and controlling them. Instead of rotating discs or flipping ramps, it uses mechanical arms, pincers, or claws that grip, lift, or completely immobilize the opponent. A grabber is like a robotic predator – it clamps onto you firmly and then does whatever it wants with you.

How does a grabber fight?

A grabber isn’t a robot that fights with brute force. It’s a tactician.

  1. Making contact – the robot tries to approach the opponent head-on and catch them with its jaws.
  2. Grabbing and immobilizing – the grip is usually strong enough that the opponent cannot escape.
  3. Manipulating the opponent – it can lift, spin, push it against the wall, or fully immobilize it.
  4. Cooperating with the arena – in some arenas, the opponent can be lifted and carried to a “trap,” or handed over to the arena’s own hazard.

  • Risk against strong spinners – if the grab fails in time, the grabber can easily be damaged

How to build your own grabber?

1. Basic frame and chassis

  • A solid construction with a low center of gravity
  • Two- or four-wheel drive for easy maneuvering

2. Designing the gripping system

  • Jaw type: two opposing arms, tweezers, flat “shovels”
  • Control method: servo, linear actuator, pneumatics, hydraulics
  • Maximum grip force: measured in newtons – must withstand resistance and impacts

3. Precise control

  • Jaw control must be fast and reliable
  • Option for a gradual grip or a fast strike (snap grab)

4. Testing stability and response

  • Training against different types of opponents – pusher, flipper, spinner
  • Simulating grip, weight-bearing, motor load
