Types of Weapons for Combat Robots
The weapon is the heart of every combat robot – it defines your fighting style, tactics, and chances of victory in the arena. Among the most common types of weapons for combat robots are spinning spinners, powerful pushers, lifting lifters, striking and cutting weapons like hammers, axes and saws, as well as grabbers and flippers. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses worth knowing before you start building your own robot.
Spinner
A spinner is a rotational weapon – a disc, drum or bar spun to high speed that strikes the opponent with enormous kinetic energy. It’s one of the most destructive combat robot weapon types, but requires careful balancing and an extremely rugged build.
Pusher
A pusher relies on strength and maneuverability instead of an aggressive weapon – it simply pushes the opponent, trying to force it out of the arena or into a disadvantageous position. It’s one of the most reliable and simplest approaches to building a combat robot.
Lifter
A lifter uses a lifting mechanism to get underneath the opponent and then raise or flip it over. It requires sufficient power and precise timing, but rewards you with the ability to quickly take an opponent out of the fight.
Hammer, Axe & Saw
Striking and cutting weapons deliver devastating blows from above or through a cutting motion. They’re visually spectacular and can cause serious damage, though they tend to be power-hungry and mechanically more complex.
Grabber
A grabber is designed to grip and immobilize the opponent’s robot, often combined with another attacking function such as crushing or flipping. Its main advantage is near-total control over the opponent’s movement in the arena.
Flipper
A flipper uses a pneumatic or mechanical piston to violently lift and flip the opponent onto its back. A well-built flipper can decide a match with a single successful hit.
Other Weapon Types
Beyond the classic categories, there are many hybrid and experimental weapons that combine multiple principles at once – from combined grabber-lifter designs to unconventional solutions tailored to a specific weight category.
Choosing the right weapon is closely tied to your robot’s other parameters. Take a look at the weight categories and movement types for combat robots, or return to the overview of all combat robot types.
